Beechcraft VC-6A Air Force One

This Beechcraft VC-6A King Air was purchased by the United States Air Force specifically to fly Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson ( First Lady Claudia Johnson) from Bergstrom AFB to the Johnson Ranch near Stonewall Texas. The runway at their ranch was to short to handle the large Air Force One VC-137jets. So, they would be flown from Washington DC to Bergstrom AFB. There they would transfer over to the little Beechcraft and fly over to their ranch and vice-versa.  Because of these frequent flights, the aircraft became informally known as the “Lady Bird Special,” a play on the childhood nickname “Lady Bird” of First Lady Claudia Johnson. When the President was on-board, this little airplane was called “Air Force One”. The Beechcraft VC-6A “Air Force One” is now on display at the United States Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio.
